Database Builder and Administrator / Data Analyst / Programmer

Updated 12/16/2018

My educational background is marine biology, with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in that field. While earning those degrees, I obtained valuable knowledge and experience with statistics, data analysis, and data management. I further honed those abilities while working as a marine biologist, first in fisheries biology and later in salt marsh ecology.

I gained valuable experience in database design and management in my first job after college. I also provided customer service with respect to utilizing products distributed by our company. Before leaving this position, I helped to automate billing and revised/updated standard operating procedures for working with the database and other office procedures.

I became a high school teacher to help educate young people and get them as interested in science as I always was. I have enjoyed my time teaching, but I am now seeking to get back into a field that aligns more with my expertise.

I used R to run custom data analysis and statistics for my master’s thesis, Reproductive analysis of southern and gulf flounders (Paralichthys lethostigma and P. albigutta) in South Carolina based on scuba surveys.

I have since become proficient in Python, HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, and SQL. I have designed multiple databases used by the National Estuarine Research Reserve System’s ACE Basin group working out of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. These databases were often complex, relating multiple tables and including significant metadata on the nature of data collection. I wrote specialized queries to aid in data analysis. I also wrote standard operating procedures for maintaining sampling equipment including calibration, maintenance, downloading data, data QA/QC, and editing specialized computer code to interface with the equipment.

I am very interested in any position that will allow me to manage/analyze data, build custom applications/software, and apply my data skills.
