Position overview

The Decision Support Analyst administers College of Charleston data systems maintained by the IR office. Completes the data-to-information life cycle to include designing, testing, documentation, deployment, maintenance and support. Designs and maintains reports and dashboards for internal campus and public consumption, including the Board of Trustees. Designs and maintains database and reporting applications in various environments (i.e., SQL, SAS, etc.) to run against the ERP system (Banner). Maintains and updates all Institutional Research Datamarts and scheduled processes to support external and internal decision support, accountability, and performance reporting needs.

Works with the Director and other IR analysts to design and maintain applications to run against the academic departmental data, finance, and human resource data in Banner. Develops and designs data architecture for the purposes of building presentation dashboards, utilizing complex programming analyses, for a variety of constituents, including the Board of Trustees and Executive Administration. Creates dashboards that will complement a wide range of requests using data in different formats and from various platforms including Cognos, Tableau, and SAS. Evaluates availability, accuracy and validity of institutional data sources and reporting tools to be utilized.

Analyzes and transforms raw data into targeted dashboards used to make evidence-based decisions by varying levels of leadership within the College. Utilizes data management and analytical skills to complete the data-to-information life cycle to include designing, testing, deployment, maintenance and support. Maintains documentation (metadata) of all IR data architecture. Prepares flowcharts, block diagrams, and other documentation to illustrate programs and procedures and prepares user documentation.

Ensures data integrity with existing checks and balances or by implementing new strategies. Routinely updates Tableau and Cognos report metadata and assists with archiving obsolete work. Analyzes current processes and procedures against best industry practices and to determine efficiencies or cost savings. Monitors scheduled processes for successful completion and uses or sets up alerts for unsuccessful jobs. Assists with the design and maintenance of the IR website using the College CMS.

Extracts, compiles, and formats reports and/or dashboards for public consumption via web protocols. Collaborates with College faculty and staff to gather feedback for assessment and improvement of the website. Collaborates with IR colleagues on special projects and as needed. Assists with Tableau dashboard and Cognos report development. Serves as a subject-matter expert and liaison for the IR office within the College and to the greater community.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree in business administration, computer science, mathematics/statistics, engineering, management information science, data processing or related field and experience with Tableau, Cognos, SQL, and/or SAS is required. Working knowledge of methods and techniques of data extraction, analysis, and reporting is preferred. A master's degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience. Experience working in a higher education environment is preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Understanding of methods and techniques of data extraction, analysis and reporting. Current knowledge and understanding of the data and information that is important to an academic institution. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and to communicate effectively. Must be able to work well under strict deadlines.

Preferred: Knowledge of specific

Computer software packages such as Tableau and Cognos, programming languages and operating systems, including Ellucian Banner databases, SQL, Cognos, SAS, HTML, and Microsoft Office.
