Get a Grasp on Facebook Changes at Step Ahead's Brown Bag Lunch

CHARLESTON, S.C. – From the new ticker to Timeline, when Facebook users logged in last week they found a host of new changes by the popular social network. Step Ahead, Inc., a Charleston-based company that manages social media and public relations campaigns for businesses, will offer a brown bag lunch Oct. 12 to help businesses and individuals navigate the major updates and understand their impact.

At the informal lunch "Understanding Facebook's Latest Changes," which will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in downtown Charleston, the social media team at Step Ahead will review the recent changes and provide insight on how businesses should adjust their Facebook marketing strategy. There will also be a question-and-answer period to address any concerns or issues and explain specific features in more detail.

The new changes from Facebook include Smart Lists of friends to compete with Google+ "Circles," Top Stories in the newsfeed, a Ticker that shows friend activity in real time, partnerships with media companies like Spotify, Hulu and Netflix, a new personal profile called Timeline intended to serve as a scrapbook of your life and more.

"While I think these changes are mostly good for businesses and individuals, Facebook did too much at once and it's quite overwhelming for most people to get a handle on," says Lyn Mettler, company president. "It's part of our job to stay up to date on these changes for our clients, so we thought it would be helpful to share our knowledge so others can get on board with the changes as well."

Mettler was recently on WISH TV in Indianapolis, where Step Ahead has a Midwest office, discussing the changes, and she also wrote an article for Inside Indiana Business on their impact on businesses.

The brown bag lunch will cost $15 per person at the door and attendees are asked to bring their own lunch.
