Charleston International Airport secures its first nonstop, coast-to-coast flight with Alaska Airlines' plans to offer service between Seattle and Charleston.

The flight between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Charleston International Airport, set to begin Nov. 16, is the Charleston airport's first West Coast connection, according to Sen. Paul Campbell Jr., Charleston County Aviation Authority's airports director.

"This is huge news for South Carolina and Charleston International Airport. ... With this new service to Seattle on Alaska Airlines, the door is open to expand passenger service and explore other West Coast destinations," Campbell said.

The Seattle-based airline will fly to Charleston, departing at 8:30 a.m. and arriving at 4:50 p.m., every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The airline will fly to Seattle, departing at 5:50 p.m. and arriving at 9:10 p.m., on the same days.

The flight, which will be aboard a Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft, will help Boeing employees traveling between the North Charleston and Everett, Wash., 787 Dreamliner facilities.

"The Boeing Co. continues to make a profound impact on the Charleston community," Helen Hill, an airport board member and executive director of the Charleston Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, said in a news release.

Alaska Airlines also added nonstop service from Seattle to Nashville, Tenn., and Raleigh-Durham beginning Sept. 23 and Oct. 1, respectively. Alaska Airlines will serve 83 destinations from Seattle by the fall.

Charleston International has been recruiting more flights and airlines to the airport amid its nearly $200 million terminal renovation project and continued passenger growth, which hit 3.1 million passengers in 2014.
