Google Turns On Free Wi-Fi In Downtown Summerville

Town of Summerville

(SUMMERVILLE, S.C.) Town Square, October 1, 2013 – Residents, visitors and businesses can now take advantage of free Wi-Fi at another Lowcountry gathering place.

Today, Google and the Town of Summerville announced free Wi-Fi access at Hutchinson Square in the town's Historic Downtown. Laptop, tablet and handheld users are able to access the Internet 100% free of charge.

"Although Summerville is known for its deep history, our leaders have always kept an eye on what's coming up next," said Summerville Mayor Bill Collins. "Internet access and the exchange of thoughts and ideas is a big part of what is driving our new economy, so we jumped at the chance to partner with the folks from Google - especially since this has been done with no cost to our taxpayers."

Google provided a community grant to operate and maintain the Wi-Fi network. In all, Google has provided more than $263,000 to create Wi-Fi hotspots across the Lowcountry.

This is the first phase of what we hope will be a plan to provide Wi-Fi in more areas of the Town.

The Wi-Fi network is now live and available.
