Benefitfocus to Provide Cost Saving Services for North Carolina State Agencies

Charleston, S.C. – December 18, 2012 - Benefitfocus, the nation's largest healthcare and benefits technology provider, announced that the North Carolina State Health Plan Board of Trustees has selected the BENEFITFOCUS(r) Platform for benefit eligibility and enrollment services for more than 664,000 of the state employees, teachers, retirees and their dependents covered by the State Health Plan.

After a highly competitive bid process, the State Health Plan ultimately divided up the administrative services for an estimated savings of $22 million per year. Benefitfocus was awarded the contract to simplify the Plan's complex benefit administration and streamline the benefit enrollment process through the proven cloud-based technology that has attracted more than 18 million members to the Benefitfocus Platform.

Over 270 state agencies participate in the State Health Plan including city governments, K-12 public school systems, colleges and universities. Providing one place to manage all benefits, Benefitfocus equips the State Health Plan with the technology needed to handle the intricacies associated with a large number of participants. The Platform seamlessly exchanges data in the cloud between each state agency and all insurance carriers, payroll systems and other administrative service providers, eliminating the need to enter data into multiple systems and reducing the rate of potentially costly errors.

With the NC Flex benefits package consisting of more than 30 different types of coverage, the State Health Plan wanted to communicate the value of their package as well as provide members with a quality understanding of the benefits they offer. Benefitfocus incorporates educational videos to help explain pertinent details about the available plans, creating a more enjoyable user experience. Plan shopping tools also allow members to personalize expected usage and estimate costs in order to easily identify the best benefit options for their budget and healthcare needs.

"After working with the State Health Plan for several years, we have a solid understanding of how much emphasis they place on simplifying benefits for their members through a user-friendly enrollment process," stated Shawn Jenkins, President and CEO of Benefitfocus. "We're excited to showcase how Benefitfocus technology drives efficiency in managing benefits while providing the State Health Plan with innovative and engaging enrollment tools for their members."
