Charleston Digital Corridor Release

Seventeen companies call FS2 home

CHARLESTON, S.C. – August 25, 2011 – The Charleston Digital Corridor is pleased to announce, since the dedication in June, the City of Charleston's second co-working/incubator facility dedicated for intermediate-stage, knowledge-based companies, the Flagship2, is fully occupied. The 13,700 square foot facility, strategically located in downtown Charleston, has a total of 16 leasable offices.

Of the 17 companies in residence at the Flagship2 (FS2), 9 have relocated to Charleston, SC from Georgia, Florida, Connecticut, New York and California creating 64 jobs in just three months. Business sectors represented at FS2 include Software Development, Internet Technology, Engineering, Sustainability and Advertising. "I am very pleased at the positive response to the development of the city's second facility designed to support the growth of Charleston's knowledge economy," said Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. "With FS2, we have successfully leveraged the knowledge gleaned from the development of our first building (Flagship) in 2009. FS2 is financially self-supporting, a win for city taxpayers and our target companies," he added.

Current FS2 resident, Mark Volkmann relocated from California to Charleston to launch his new venture,2Book. "Being welcomed into an environment where 2Book is able to focus exclusively on executing its strategy without the myriad distractions relating to leasing and outfitting office space has allowed us to hit the ground running," said Volkman. "FS2 provides a community environment where young, dynamic businesses can easily share experiences and wisdom that relate to common challenges we all face," he added.

"Charleston's innovation economy is on the move," said City of Charleston Business Development Director, Ernest Andrade. "We are accelerating the high-wage, knowledge segment of our already diverse economy at an unprecedented rate and encourage middle to senior technical professionals seeking a prosperous, amenity-rich lifestyle, to join in this explosive growth."

Complementing the robust upturn in knowledge-based companies at the Flagship and FS2 are a handful of software companies, including Blue Acorn, BoomTown, Equiscript and Avista Solutions, who have recently located or expanded their business operations to Downtown Charleston.
