Charleston Digital Corridor and Local Tech Companies Provide Funding for Female Youth Program

Charleston Digital Corridor Release

Charleston, SC – June 22, 2011 – As a proponent of encouraging women to pursue careers in science and mathematics and understanding that talent is the key driver of a knowledge economy, the Charleston Digital Corridor teamed up with several member companies to provide funding for the Women In Charge program at Moultrie Middle School in Mount Pleasant.

The Digital Corridor led this effort by choosing Women-In-Charge as one of the beneficiaries of its annual iFive:Krace, a yearly fundraiser for the Charleston Digital Corridor Scholarship Fund. "Developing local talent at an early stage is an important component of our knowledge based business development strategy," said Digital Corridor Director, Ernest Andrade.

.

Additional corporate support was made by Digital Corridor member companies: Environmental Express, PeopleMatter, HurryHurry, SPARC, Avista Solutions and Surya Organics which raised a total of $3,000 for the Women-In-Charge program.

"Environmental Express is pleased to support the Women In Charge program at Moultrie Middle School," says Dennis Pope, CEO of Environmental Express. "We believe that programs like this that encourage females to prepare for and seek management positions in knowledge-based industries, are very beneficial to our community."

The funding, which will be earmarked for the 2011-2012 school year, enables 7th and 8th grade girls at Moultrie Middle School to participate in the Women in Charge program – a two-year science and math course designed to educate and encourage young women to pursue a career in math, science or business.

"We are very grateful for the generous contribution from the Charleston Digital Corridor and their member companies," says Millibeth Currie, Program Director of Women In Charge. "This funding enables us to provide the necessary tools so our young women can gain a true understanding of what science- and math-related careers are out there and what steps they need to take to go into these fields."

The Charleston Digital Corridor Scholarship Fund was created to educate tomorrow's innovators by providing scholarships, internships, public speaking engagements and other relevant workforce development initiatives.
